It took less than fifteen minutes for Justin to ride his bike from his house to Hill. All I had to do was promise him a week of no threats, jabs, face kicks, or tackles to get him to come. After an intense negotiation, I also had to outlaw noogies, elbow attacks, and atomic wedgies to have him to bring me a special gift. You see, Justin was a Star Wars nerd, and his mother was currently hard at work sewing him a Darth Vader cloak for his Halloween costume. The cloak would be made of wool since winter was just around the corner. I bet on her having extra lying around, and as luck would have it, I was right.
“Where to?” Justin asked me in the middle of the hallway as his stringy arms struggled to carry three book bags packed with sheep fur. I directed him to the rafters where the confetti bins had been set.
He gave me an incredulous head shake, then shuffled off to wait for his signal. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do,” he called back. I smiled big. Given his recent antics, I knew that wouldn’t be the case.
Our pal Marcus was easier to convince. Although he was the level headed, practical one of our group, he knew once my mind was made up, I was going through with this with or without his permission and quickly reasoned it was better to help than watch another one of his friend’s schemes blow up in smoke.
He had already planned on coming to support my runway debut, or witness my humiliation, depending on how you looked at it. From the staging area, he sent me a text confirming the middle school band had arrived to perform during the show. A rotund tube player, Dylan Sprout, had a widely known pancake addiction, meaning once Marcus found his lunch bag, we would have our second ingredient.
“Are you sure about this, Vanessa?” he texted me a few minutes after.
“Nope,” I replied with a winking emoticon. Then let him know the pack of water balloons were waiting for him in the soap dispenser of the men’s bathroom.
The text he sent back was hilarious. A brown faced emoticon with a furled mouth and both of it’s eyebrows raised. There was no doubt it was the look he was giving me from afar. I was pleased he was worried. Given the crazy nature of what was about to happen, it would have been troubling if he hadn’t been.
Speaking of people who were worried, “Why are Marcus and Justin here?” Lisa’s voice called from behind me.
Caught, I raised my hands in surrender. Lisa had been excited for the fashion show all week, therefore I knew she wasn’t going to be okay with all that I was planning. In a way, I didn’t blame her. She was my best friend, and here I was ruining her good time for my own.
“I didn’t want you to get upset” I whimpered.
Lisa threw her hand out to shut me up.
